About Bergamo

Revered as a city of great beauty, Bergamo’s narrow cobblestone streets exude an ancient medieval charm that hasn’t changed for centuries. Comprised of two distinct sections, Citta Alta and Citta Bassa, Bergamo is a unique tale of two cities with enticing cultures and sights.

Things to do in Bergamo

See Bergamo with a tour of the Piazza Vecchia, the heart of Citta Alta’s old town. Stroll around the central square, an elegant arrangement of medieval and Renaissance architecture. Rest in a nearby cafe and admire the beautiful Contarini, an impressive white marble fountain in the centre of the piazza.

Take a glass elevator to the top of Campanone, a 12th-century bell tower, for a magnificent view of Bergamo. For hundreds of years, Campanone’s bell has tolled 180 times every evening, a tradition that has continued since the days of Bergamo’s ancient curfew.

Don’t miss a sunset stroll along the city walls. Once a medieval network that connected Bergamo to various farms and fields, the walls remain intact and provide a picturesque view of the Lombardy region.

A trip to Bergamo isn’t complete without a ride on the funicular that connects Citta Bassa to Citta Alta. After exploring the historic old town and main monuments of Citta Alta, continue your journey on a second funicular to San Vigilio. From here, you can explore a ruined castle and admire the panoramic views.

Getting around Bergamo

Arrive by plane at Orio al Serio International Airport or take a train from Milan Centrale or Porta Garibaldi. Bergamo is compact and most attractions can be reached on foot. The cable car connecting Citta Alta and Citta Bassa connects the two cities and provides picturesque views.
